PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS FACING PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine psychological problems encountered by parents of children with disabilities. The information collected was based on the research question which demanded the examination of psychological problems. The study used Crnic, Fredrich and Greenberg (1983) Stress, Coping and Family Ecology model. The research was mainly qualitative and interviews and focus group discussion were employed to collect information from eleven parents of children with varied disabilities. It was found out that parents of children with disabilities are facing many psychological problems such as fear, sadness, guilt, grief and despair. Lastly it was recommended that there should be comprehensive systems to help parents of children with disabilities
